What are Weep Holes?
Weep holes are the small holes located on the bottom frame of your storm windows, serving as drainage. If they become clogged, water can seep into your windowsill, causing it to rot. Therefore, it’s important to clean out the weep holes of your windows at least once a year, the best time being just before the rainiest season begins. Items Needed:
- Clean Towel, Rag, or Paper Towel
- Compressed Air
- Spray Lubricant (Do not use WD-40)
- Crevice Tool (A small screwdriver or toothpick may work)

Step 1: Clean
Leaving the window closed, wipe dust, cobwebs, and debris from the window frames. Then, open the window and dust the sides and bottom of the window track and frame.

Step 2: Clear Weep Holes
Locate the weep holes on the bottom of the window track, and spray out any dust and debris with the compressed air.

Step 3: Check for Trapped Dirt
If needed, use your crevice tool (or other small tool) to clean out any dirt that may still be trapped in the weep holes. Follow up again with compressed air to ensure all dirt has been removed.

Step 4: Lubricate Top Half of Window
Close the window, and apply the spray lubricant to the sides of the window track, starting as high up as you can reach.

Step 5: Lubricate Lower Half of Window
Open the window again, cover the weep holes with your towel, apply the lubricant to the sides of the lower portion of the window track, and you’re done!
